Hollywood actress Kirsten Dunst has revealed that her family went through a frightening medical emergency involving her younger son, James, while she was filming overseas. The 43-year-old star, who is married to actor Jesse Plemons, shared in an interview with Town & Country that her 4-year-old son James fell seriously ill in Budapest, Hungary, earlier this year.
Dunst explained that she had been in the Hungarian capital shooting Ruben Östlund’s upcoming project The Entertainment System Is Down when her husband, Jesse Plemons, 37, and their two sons—Ennis, 7, and James—joined her at the beginning of the year. The family settled into a rented home, even enrolling Ennis in a local school, but everything changed when James developed a sudden health problem.
The emergency prompted the family to make a quick decision to fly back to Los Angeles to be closer to relatives and their support network. Dunst admitted that staying behind in Budapest while her family returned home was emotionally overwhelming. She described her mindset as constantly imagining worst-case scenarios, comparing the anxiety to the concept of the thriller Final Destination.
Despite the scare, Dunst emphasized that the ordeal brought her family closer. She noted that the difficult experience reinforced her bond with Plemons and made them realize the importance of sticking together during hardships.
Looking ahead, the couple is focusing on healing and creating positive memories for their children. After James requested a beach where his sandcastle wouldn’t wash away, the family has planned a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate recovery and togetherness.
Though Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons keep their children out of the spotlight, the actress occasionally shares personal anecdotes. During an April 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she revealed how her children reacted to watching the first Spider-Man film, in which she starred opposite Tobey Maguire. While her elder son Ennis found it scary, James was captivated only by the wrestling scene, which he now playfully reenacts at home.
