Indian cricketer KL Rahul has finally spoken about the constant discussions surrounding his Test batting average, revealing that while he is aware of the criticism, his main focus remains on enjoying the game and refining his cricketing approach.
After playing 63 Tests for India, Rahul currently averages 35.41, a figure that many feel does not reflect his talent or technique. Over the years, Rahul’s frequent shifts in batting positions have influenced his performance, but his recent return to the opening slot—where his Test journey began—has sparked a remarkable turnaround.
The 33-year-old has embraced his role as one of India’s senior-most players in the Test setup following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. His resurgence began during the England tour, where he amassed 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.20, including two centuries and two half-centuries, with a top score of 137. Continuing that form, Rahul struck a brilliant century against the West Indies in the ongoing Test series at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Rahul explained his approach to handling criticism and expectations:
“I don’t let it bother me, but it’s not that I don’t see it. Of course, I see the numbers, and ideally, any batter would want their stats to be as high as possible. But right now, what matters more is that my game plans are strong and I’m enjoying my cricket. When my processes are right, the runs automatically follow,” he said.
He further added that maintaining focus on fundamentals helps him perform consistently.
“It’s important to go step by step and not jump ahead. There’s always pressure and expectation because cricket is a numbers game. But I focus on what I can control and leave the rest to God,” Rahul shared.
With this renewed mindset, KL Rahul appears to have found balance—combining experience, clarity, and confidence to power through one of the best phases of his Test career.
