The beloved Steven Universe universe is set to expand once again, this time with a bold new spinoff led by an unexpected hero. Titled Lars of the Stars, the new series is currently under development and will premiere on Prime Video, marking the first time a project from the Steven Universe franchise moves away from Cartoon Network.
Unveiled during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025, Lars of the Stars was officially announced by series creator Rebecca Sugar, who revealed the news following a heartfelt live musical performance. This fresh chapter in the Steven Universe saga shifts the focus from Steven himself to Lars Barriga — once a humble donut shop employee, now a rebellious interstellar pirate.
The upcoming series will follow Lars as he navigates life as a space renegade. According to early details, Lars is portrayed as an eternal teenager turned space outlaw, captaining a diverse pirate crew. Their wild journey spans smuggling operations evading galactic authorities and discovering dark secrets hidden within the ruins of the former Gem Empire. The show promises high-stakes escapades and emotional depth, staying true to the essence of the original while exploring new cosmic territories.
Executive producing the series are Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey, the latter having served as supervising director on the original series. Backed by Cartoon Network Studios, the project signals a bold shift in platform, tone, and direction for the franchise.
While Lars of the Stars hasn’t been greenlit for full production yet, the excitement around its announcement at Annecy — combined with the backing of Prime Video — suggests strong momentum behind its development.
In addition to Lars of the Stars, Annecy 2025 also spotlighted other major animated series updates. Highlights included Adventure Time: Side Quests, a new series exploring Finn’s early solo adventures; the announcement of Teen Titans Go! Season 10; a preschool reboot titled Foster’s Funtime for Imaginary Friends; a Hulu revival of The Amazing World of Gumball called The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball; and SuperMutant Magical Academy, an Adult Swim adaptation of Jillian Tamaki’s webcomic.
