Netflix is reportedly gearing up to bring back the iconic eco-superhero in a fresh live-action adaptation of Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The widely loved 1990s animated show might soon return to screens, with Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio and acclaimed producer Greg Berlanti set to serve as executive producers. According to Variety, the project is currently in early development, although Netflix has yet to make any official announcement or comment.
Originally aired between 1990 and 1996, Captain Planet and the Planeteers and its sequel The New Adventures of Captain Planet were co-produced by DIC Entertainment and Hanna-Barbera. The series was the brainchild of environmental visionaries Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle, aiming to educate children about pressing ecological issues through a team of young heroes and their elemental powers. They would summon Captain Planet to combat environmental threats using their powers combined.
The new live-action adaptation is being scripted by Tara Hernandez, known for her work on Mrs. Davis, The Big Bang Theory, and Young Sheldon. Executive producers for this series include Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions. DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson will produce under their banner, Appian Way.
Leonardo DiCaprio has long been an active voice in environmental advocacy. Since founding the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, the actor has supported numerous conservation efforts across the globe. His foundation is dedicated to preserving endangered ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices, which closely mirrors the mission of Captain Planet himself.
This isn’t DiCaprio’s first involvement with the green-haired superhero. In 2018, reports revealed that actor Glen Powell was writing a film adaptation of Captain Planet in collaboration with DiCaprio. In a 2023 update, Powell mentioned the script was still in progress and described it as a “subversive fun and dark” version of the classic story.
While there’s still no official word on whether DiCaprio will step into the role of Captain Planet himself, fans are already drawing parallels between his real-life environmental work and the character’s fictional mission. The casting and storyline remain under wraps, but the announcement has already sparked interest among longtime fans of the original show.
