As the new month unfolds, Hollywood unleashes a fresh wave of cinematic releases, with Paramount’s much-anticipated reboot of The Naked Gun and DreamWorks Animation’s sequel The Bad Guys 2 stepping into the spotlight. These releases arrive amidst a box office environment still dominated by the Marvel blockbuster Fantastic Four: First Steps, which continues to attract massive audiences worldwide.
The reboot of The Naked Gun, headlined by Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, opened to an impressive $1.6 million in Thursday previews. The film, helmed by director Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane, revives the iconic franchise decades after its original success. Neeson takes on the role of the son of Frank Drebin, a character originally portrayed by the late Leslie Nielsen, while Paul Walter Hauser plays the son of Captain Ed Hocken. With early audience reactions and positive critical feedback fueling interest, industry experts anticipate a weekend opening between $15 million and $20 million.
Interestingly, Pamela Anderson also lends her voice to The Bad Guys 2, marking her presence in two major releases this weekend. The animated feature from Universal and DreamWorks serves as a follow-up to the 2022 hit and is projected to debut with an impressive $20 million. The family-friendly film features returning voice talents such as Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, and Awkwafina, and introduces new cast members including Zazie Beetz and Richard Ayoade. This sequel follows a gang of reformed animal criminals who are lured back into the world of crime by a mysterious new crew known as “The Bad Girls,” voiced by Maria Bakalova, Danielle Brooks, and Natasha Lyonne.
Despite strong competition, Fantastic Four: First Steps maintains its stronghold at the top of the charts, heading into its second weekend with a worldwide gross approaching the $400 million mark. Meanwhile, DC’s latest release Superman also continues to draw viewers, avoiding the superhero fatigue that plagued previous years.
