Lionel Messi has spoken about his future in international football and hinted at a potential comeback for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Argentine legend, who led his nation to glory in Qatar 2022, said that although he dreams of defending the title, his participation will depend on his fitness and form during Inter Miami’s pre-season training next year.

The 37-year-old superstar expressed that representing Argentina at another World Cup would be “extraordinary,” but he remains cautious about making a final commitment. Messi explained that he will carefully assess his physical condition before deciding if he can contribute to the national team at the same level as before.

“Yes, being at a World Cup again would be something truly special,” Messi shared in an interview. “I would love to play if I’m in good shape and can truly help my team. I’ll take it day by day and see how I feel when the new season begins with Inter Miami.”

Messi also reflected on the emotions of defending the World Cup title, calling it one of the most cherished dreams for any footballer. “The chance to play again and defend what we achieved in 2022 would be incredible,” he said. “It’s always an honor to represent Argentina, and hopefully, I get the chance to do it again.”

Since his move to the United States, Messi has continued to showcase his brilliance in Major League Soccer, proving that age has not dulled his magic. However, the level of competition in the MLS differs from that of Europe, and Messi’s decision will ultimately depend on whether he believes he can still perform at the highest level when 2026 arrives.
