The long-awaited sequel to the 2005 crime drama Lord of War is officially moving forward, with a confirmed theatrical release planned for 2027 in the United States. Titled Lords of War, the film will see Nicolas Cage reprise his iconic role as international arms dealer Yuri Orlov.
The sequel is once again written and directed by Andrew Niccol, who helmed the original film. This new chapter expands the story by introducing a powerful new character Anton, played by Bill Skarsgård. In a dramatic twist, Anton is revealed to be Yuri Orlov’s son, and the storyline centers on a tense rivalry between the two as Anton builds his own mercenary force aiming to surpass his father’s legacy.
Set against the backdrop of modern conflicts involving American interests in the Middle East, the film explores the shadowy world of private armies and global arms dealing. The narrative dives deeper into themes of power influence and moral ambiguity, continuing the tone that made the original film a cult favorite.
The movie features a strong supporting cast including Laura Harrier Sylvia Hoeks and Greg Tarzan Davis. Production has recently wrapped in Morocco adding an international setting to the film’s gritty atmosphere.
The project is backed by Vendôme Pictures which handled both production and financing. Producers from the original film Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi return alongside Andrew Niccol and Nicolas Cage who also serves as a producer under Saturn Films. Executive producers include Bill Skarsgård and several industry collaborators.
Distribution rights in the United States have been acquired by Vertical which is planning to showcase early footage at CinemaCon to build anticipation among exhibitors and audiences.
According to Niccol the sequel aims to explore deeper layers of Yuri Orlov’s character while introducing a formidable new adversary in his son. Rather than correcting his father’s actions Anton seeks to outdo them creating a darker and more intense narrative direction.
With its compelling storyline returning lead actor and expanded universe Lords of War is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated crime thrillers set for release in 2027.
