Love Island USA star Cierra Ortega has spoken publicly for the first time since her unexpected exit from the reality show following backlash over resurfaced posts showing her using a racial slur directed at the Asian community. Taking to Instagram, Ortega posted an emotional video where she admitted her fault and apologised, saying she is “deeply truly honestly” sorry to everyone she offended, especially the Asian community.
In the clip, the 25-year-old expressed remorse for the offensive term she used in old social media posts. “While I was in the villa some posts from my past came up where I very naively used an incredibly offensive and derogatory word. I had no idea the word carried so much pain harm and history. I had no ill intent but that doesn’t excuse my ignorance,” she said.
Cierra Ortega agreed with the network’s decision to remove her from Love Island USA, acknowledging that she deserved to be held accountable. “I completely agree with the decision to remove me from the villa. This is something that deserved punishment and the punishment has absolutely been received,” she added, stating that she stands by the show’s choice to act firmly.
Meanwhile, Love Island fans flooded the comments with mixed reactions. While some close friends and loyal followers offered their support saying “Love you always and forever” and “Wishing you peace,” many netizens labelled the video as a “fake apology” and criticised her for the delay in responding. One user on X wrote, “Why use a word you don’t even know the meaning of in the first place?” Another added, “We don’t care about her fake apology once a racist always a racist she deserves the hate and backlash.”
Cierra Ortega’s family had previously asked people to show compassion while addressing the harsh comments online. She reportedly took two days to collect her thoughts before sharing the statement, officially exiting Love Island USA on July 6. The incident has sparked wider conversations about accountability and the responsibility of reality stars to be aware of their words and actions, both past and present.
