Manchester United boosted their hopes of securing a top four finish in the Premier League with an important 3 1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
Managed by Michael Carrick, United delivered a strong second half performance to take control of the match. The breakthrough came when Casemiro scored with a well timed header early in the second half to give the home side the lead.
Villa responded through Ross Barkley, who fired in an equaliser after capitalising on a defensive lapse. However United regained momentum soon after as Matheus Cunha found the net with a composed finish following a brilliant assist from Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes once again proved decisive in midfield as his creativity helped unlock the Villa defence. His assist in the match marked another milestone in his impressive record for the club placing him among the top playmakers in United history alongside David Beckham.
Late in the game substitute Benjamin Sesko sealed the win with a deflected strike ensuring all three points for United. The victory marks a strong run of form under Carrick who has guided the team to several wins since taking charge.
With this result Manchester United remain third in the league standings and move three points ahead of Aston Villa in the race for Champions League qualification. The win strengthens their position as they aim to secure a place among Europe’s elite clubs next season.
Elsewhere in the league Nottingham Forest managed to climb out of the relegation zone after a goalless draw against Fulham. Meanwhile Leeds United held Crystal Palace to a draw despite being reduced to ten players in a dramatic encounter.
Later fixtures see Tottenham Hotspur battling to avoid relegation as they prepare to face Liverpool, who are aiming to climb further up the table.
