Carlos Alcaraz has stormed into the spotlight at the US Open 2025, and former World No. 1 Mats Wilander believes the Spanish star is the clear favorite to lift the trophy this year. Despite the presence of Novak Djokovic and defending champion Jannik Sinner, Wilander insists Alcaraz is “the man to beat” after a dominant start in New York.
Alcaraz in top form at US Open 2025
The 21-year-old world No. 2 has advanced to the last 16 without dropping a set, most recently defeating Italy’s Lucas Darderi 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. His speed, precision, and relentless focus have impressed fans and analysts alike, with Wilander praising his flawless movement and powerful forehand.
“Alcaraz is playing extremely well,” Wilander told TNT Sports. “His focus is incredible, the movement is so sharp that it looks impossible to get past him. He might say his forehand isn’t perfect, but to me it looks close to flawless. He’s serving well too, and for once at this stage of the tournament, he looks like the man to beat.”
Rivalry with Djokovic and Sinner
While Djokovic secured a strong third-round win over Britain’s Cameron Norrie, and Sinner remains unbeaten in sets at this year’s US Open, Wilander believes Alcaraz looks sharper and more determined. The Spaniard has won 30 of his last 31 matches, with his only defeat coming against Sinner in the Wimbledon 2025 final.
Alcaraz’s next challenge will be Arthur Rinderknech, world No. 82. Although Alcaraz has beaten him three times before, two of those matches were tightly contested, with Rinderknech’s big serve and aggressive net play capable of testing the Spaniard’s defense.
Learning from past disappointments
Alcaraz has openly admitted that last year’s early US Open exit against Botic van de Zandschulp was a tough lesson. The former champion said the loss taught him discipline and focus, and he is now using that experience as motivation to stay sharp throughout this year’s tournament.
With his maturity, consistency, and hunger for victory, Wilander believes Alcaraz has set himself apart as the standout contender. “He’s not just in the conversation,” Wilander said. “Right now, he is the standard everyone else has to match.”
As the tournament heads into its decisive stages, all eyes will be on Alcaraz to see if he can claim his second US Open crown and continue his rise as the future face of men’s tennis.
