In a significant move to expand Meghalaya’s agricultural exports and provide farmers with international market access, a delegation of government officials and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) is participating in a Market Exposure Visit to Dubai from March 16 to 18, 2025. Spearheaded by the Meghalaya State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB), the delegation is actively promoting the state’s organic and GI-tagged agricultural products at key events on March 17 at Our Wellness Village Café, Sahara Centre, Sharjah, and on March 18 at Lulu Hypermarket, Silicon Oasis, Dubai. Meghalaya’s signature products, including premium Turmeric, Ginger, and Strawberries, are being showcased under the Meghalaya Collective brand to attract global buyers.
Meghalaya, renowned for its diverse agricultural landscape and organic farming practices, is emerging as a leader in India’s high-value agricultural sector. With over 80% of its population dependent on agriculture, the state has prioritized mission-driven initiatives in Turmeric, Ginger, Mushroom, Apiculture, Spices, Khasi Mandarin, and Pineapple, focusing on value addition, sustainability, and enhancing farmer incomes. Strengthening its global trade presence, Meghalaya signed an MoU with Lulu Group International in November 2023, facilitating the successful export of Khasi Mandarin, Pineapple, and Ginger to Dubai, further advancing its agricultural trade partnerships.
Smt. Batrity M Umlong, Director of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya, emphasized the importance of global outreach, stating:
“Meghalaya is dedicated to providing sustainable trade opportunities for its farmers. This visit is an important step in integrating Meghalaya’s agricultural community into the global market. Strengthening our trade networks and forming long-term partnerships will open new avenues for our farmers, ensuring better income and market stability.”
The delegation is actively engaging with major retailers, trade partners, and industry stakeholders to foster long-term collaborations and boost Meghalaya’s agricultural exports. This initiative is a strategic component of Meghalaya’s Vision 2028, which aims to transform the state into a USD 10 billion economy by leveraging agriculture, tourism, and international trade. With a strong focus on sustainable farming, improved processing infrastructure, and expanding global partnerships, Meghalaya is positioning itself as a key exporter of organic and high-value agricultural products. The trade mission to Dubai is expected to enhance market reach, increase farmer earnings, and elevate Meghalaya’s standing in global agribusiness.
