Legendary British actor Michael Caine is set to make a remarkable comeback to the big screen after announcing his retirement in 2023. At 92 years old, the Oscar-winning star will reprise his role as Dolan in The Last Witch Hunter 2, the sequel to the 2015 fantasy-action film. The project is currently being developed by Lionsgate in collaboration with Vin Diesel’s production company, One Race Films.

The original movie, released in 2015, followed Vin Diesel as Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter who defends humanity against dark covens. Michael Caine portrayed the 36th Dolan, a priest and mentor figure who guided Kaulder through his mission. Despite mixed reviews, the film earned nearly $130 million globally and has since grown into a cult favorite on streaming platforms, ranking among the most-watched films this year.

Lionsgate executives revealed that the lasting popularity of the first movie inspired them to greenlight a sequel. Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, emphasized how advancements in technology now allow them to deliver a more ambitious continuation of the supernatural saga.

“The Last Witch Hunter has continued to build a loyal fan base over the past decade. Reuniting Michael Caine and Vin Diesel ensures that the sequel not only honors the original but expands its universe on a much larger scale,” said Fogelson in a statement.

The original film, directed by Breck Eisner, was partly inspired by Vin Diesel’s personal passion for Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. It starred Rose Leslie as Chloe, a witch ally, and Julie Engelbrecht as the Witch Queen.

For Michael Caine, who last appeared in The Great Escaper in 2023, this marks both a personal and professional milestone, echoing his character’s arc in the franchise—postponing retirement to join Kaulder once again in the fight against supernatural threats.

Fans can now look forward to The Last Witch Hunter 2, where the unlikely duo of Vin Diesel and Michael Caine will reunite for another action-packed battle against the forces of darkness.
