Amid the off-field noise, Clarke believes India are better placed to handle both the pressure and conditions.
Speaking on the Beyond 23 Cricket podcast, Clarke said India have consistently managed the intensity of India-Pakistan clashes far better in recent years. He pointed out that Pakistan appear to be dealing with distractions away from the field, which could impact their performance in such a high-pressure contest. According to Clarke, uncertainty over participation and external issues rarely help a team’s mindset going into a World Cup game of this magnitude.
The former World Cup-winning captain also highlighted the importance of conditions in Sri Lanka, noting that pitches there behave very differently compared to those in India. Clarke explained that Sri Lankan surfaces tend to be slower and offer more turn, which could prevent the match from becoming a high-scoring affair. He suggested that a total around 190 may prove competitive rather than excessive.
Clarke added that while Pakistan are capable of pulling off a win, they would need to produce their absolute best performance and rely on India making mistakes. In contrast, he believes India are currently in top form and entering the contest with momentum and confidence.
