Microsoft has officially denied widespread rumours suggesting that Xbox chief Phil Spencer is planning to step down anytime soon. The speculation emerged following Microsoft’s announcement of significant layoffs that have impacted several teams within the Xbox gaming division, including multiple first-party studios and the cancellation of several in-development projects.
Phil Spencer, who has been leading Xbox since 2014 and currently holds the role of Microsoft Gaming CEO, was said to be considering retirement after the next-generation Xbox console launch, with Xbox President Sarah Bond rumoured to be his successor. The rumour gained traction on social media when a Call of Duty-focused tipster posted claims about Spencer’s exit.
However, Microsoft has firmly put the rumours to rest. Kari Perez, Xbox’s head of communications, confirmed in a statement to The Verge that “Phil is not retiring anytime soon.” Microsoft’s communications chief Frank Shaw also addressed the speculation on X, dismissing the rumour as completely fabricated.
Phil Spencer, a long-standing veteran of the gaming industry and a prominent figure at Xbox, joined the unit in 2001 and has held various senior roles at Microsoft since then. He became head of Xbox, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, Xbox Video and Microsoft Studios in 2014 and was later promoted to CEO of Microsoft Gaming in 2022.
The speculation about Spencer’s retirement coincided with Microsoft’s announcement this week that it would lay off about four percent of its total workforce — more than 9,000 employees — with its gaming teams hit particularly hard. First-party studios such as King Raven Software Sledgehammer Games Rare Halo Studios Turn10 Studios and Zenimax Online Studios have all reportedly been affected. In addition to layoffs, Xbox has cancelled the reboot of Perfect Dark and shut down its developer The Initiative. Other projects including Rare’s Everwild and an unannounced Zenimax MMO have also been scrapped as part of a wider review to focus on the strongest opportunities for growth.
In an internal memo addressing the layoffs, Phil Spencer acknowledged the challenging decision but stated that these changes are necessary to ensure Xbox’s long-term success. “We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities,” he said while reassuring employees that Xbox’s roadmap for hardware and content has never looked stronger.
Despite the rumours, it’s clear that Phil Spencer remains committed to steering Xbox through a period of transformation as the company navigates industry shifts and sharpens its focus on its most promising projects.
