Since Tom Cruise first stepped into the role of Ethan Hunt back in 1996, the Mission Impossible franchise has become one of Hollywood’s most successful and enduring action series. With each film featuring jaw-dropping stunts and global espionage thrills, fans have followed the journey of Ethan Hunt for nearly three decades.
Now with the release of Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, questions are swirling about whether this could be the last mission for the beloved secret agent. However, according to key cast members, the future of the franchise is far from set in stone.
Angela Bassett, who plays the role of Erika Sloane, recently told PEOPLE that with someone like Tom Cruise at the helm, it’s never wise to count anything out. “You can never count Mr Cruise down or out. He’s always up for an incredible adventure and delivering exactly what the audience is looking for,” she said. “I would never assume it’s the end.”
Simon Pegg, who has portrayed tech-savvy agent Benji Dunn since the third film, echoed similar thoughts. “Never say never,” he stated. “That’s how I live. The last two films took five years to make. I don’t think Tom likes the idea of anything being final. Even if this turns out to be the last, the goal is to leave viewers with a feeling that more could still come.”
Tom Cruise himself remained tight-lipped on whether The Final Reckoning would close the chapter. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, he said, “Let us just show the movie tonight. This represents 30 years of dedication. I want people to enjoy the film first.”
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning is now playing in theatres. The action-packed sequel to Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) marks the eighth entry in the blockbuster spy saga. The cast also features Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, and Henry Czerny in pivotal roles.
