Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) has strongly condemned the “unjust aggression and misconduct” of security personnel and stadium management following disturbing incidents involving fans during the Indian Super League (ISL) semi-final against Jamshedpur FC. The first leg of the semi-final, held at JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur, ended in a 2-1 victory for Jamshedpur FC, but chaotic scenes off the pitch overshadowed the contest.
In a statement issued after the match, Mohun Bagan SG criticized the handling of away supporters, emphasizing that football is nothing without its fans. The club’s response came after multiple videos surfaced on social media showing fans allegedly being forcibly removed from the stadium, with some reportedly sustaining injuries and bleeding following an alleged police lathi charge.
Eyewitness footage also captured instances of Mohun Bagan supporters making inappropriate gestures, sparking further controversy surrounding the already intense fixture.
On the field, Jamshedpur FC secured a crucial win despite having only 26.9% possession against Mohun Bagan SG, the League Shield winners. Javi Siverio opened the scoring in the 24th minute, only for Jason Cummings to equalize in the 37th minute. However, a dramatic injury-time winner from Javi Hernandez (90+1′) gave Jamshedpur FC the advantage heading into the second leg in Kolkata on Monday.
With tensions running high after the controversial security measures, all eyes will be on Salt Lake Stadium, where Mohun Bagan SG will look to overturn the deficit in front of their home crowd.
