In a thrilling IPL 2025 encounter between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), young spinner Vignesh Puthur made a strong impression in his debut match. The 24-year-old Kerala spinner was introduced as Mumbai’s Impact Player, stepping in for Rohit Sharma in the second innings. He grabbed three crucial wickets, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda, giving MI a fighting chance.
Despite Vignesh’s impressive spell, Mumbai Indians fell short, continuing their streak of losing the opening match of the season for the 13th consecutive year. While MS Dhoni faced just two deliveries before Rachin Ravindra sealed the game with a six, the former CSK captain took notice of Vignesh’s impactful bowling performance.
Dhoni’s Special Gesture for Vignesh Puthur
Following CSK’s victory, MS Dhoni and Rachin Ravindra greeted the opposition players, and that’s when Dhoni met Vignesh. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter patted him on the back, appreciating his performance.
Commenting on the moment, former India coach Ravi Shastri, who was on commentary, said, “That’s a moment to cherish for young Vignesh Puthur. A pat on the shoulder from MS Dhoni is something he will never forget.”
Vignesh’s Impressive IPL Debut
Vignesh became a part of IPL 2025 through Mumbai Indians’ scouting system, a process that MI stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav praised after the match.
“MI has a reputation for finding young talent, and the scouting team works year-round. Vignesh is a perfect example of that,” said Suryakumar Yadav.
The spinner made an immediate impact by breaking a crucial 67-run partnership, dismissing CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. In the next two overs, he sent Dube and Hooda back to the pavilion, strengthening Mumbai’s fightback.
However, MI couldn’t capitalize on his performance, largely missing the services of Jasprit Bumrah in the bowling attack. Suryakumar had held back Vignesh’s over for the 18th, but the young spinner conceded 15 runs, as CSK comfortably chased the target.
With MS Dhoni’s recognition and Mumbai Indians’ faith in his talent, Vignesh Puthur has already started making waves in the IPL.
