Acclaimed actress Naomi Watts is stepping into the role of legendary ballerina Margot Fonteyn in the upcoming romantic drama Margot & Rudi. The film will be directed by Anthony Fabian, known for his work on Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, and will explore the fascinating partnership between Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev.
Set during the vibrant Swinging Sixties era, the story focuses on the powerful artistic and personal connection between Fonteyn, then an established prima ballerina in her forties, and Nureyev, a young and rebellious Soviet defector who rose to fame as her dance partner. Their electrifying performances captivated global audiences and sparked widespread speculation about a deeper bond beyond the stage.
The role of Nureyev will be played by Alexandr Trush, a principal dancer recognized for his performances in productions such as Giselle and Romeo and Juliet. The film will also feature an impressive supporting cast including Richard E. Grant, Demián Bichir, and Harriet Walter.
Director Anthony Fabian shared that his inspiration for the project began during his childhood, when watching performances of Fonteyn and Nureyev sparked his love for storytelling that blends dance music and drama. He described their relationship as unconventional and emotionally compelling, transcending cultural and social boundaries.
The screenplay has been written by Olivia Hetreed, who previously collaborated with Fabian. Production will be handled by Elysian Films along with several partners, bringing together a strong creative team behind the project.
International sales for Margot & Rudi will be managed by WestEnd Films, with the project set to be introduced to global buyers at the Cannes Film Festival market.
With its focus on one of ballet’s most iconic partnerships, the film aims to deliver a visually rich and emotionally layered story that celebrates art passion and human connection.
