Minor aches and pains are part of everyday life, but simple natural habits can often make a difference. Dr Kunal Sood, a pain medicine specialist, suggests four easy lifestyle additions that can help support the body’s natural healing ability — from reducing inflammation to relieving headaches and improving digestion.
According to Dr Sood, using natural ingredients like turmeric, ginger, and peppermint oil can bring gentle relief from discomfort while improving overall wellbeing. These remedies can be safely incorporated into daily routines without the need for complex treatments or medications.
Turmeric to fight inflammation
Turmeric’s key active compound, curcumin, is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Dr Sood explains that studies show turmeric can reduce pain and swelling in arthritis, sometimes showing effects comparable to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Curcumin works by blocking inflammation pathways and reducing cytokine production. For best results, supplements with enhanced absorption may provide greater benefits.
Ginger for smoother digestion
Ginger has long been used to support digestive health. Its natural compounds, gingerols and shogaols, promote smoother stomach movement and help reduce bloating, gas, and nausea. Dr Sood recommends including ginger in meals or teas to maintain healthy digestion and comfort, noting that it’s well tolerated with minimal side effects.
Peppermint oil for tension headaches
For those prone to mild tension headaches, peppermint oil can be a natural solution. When applied topically, diluted peppermint oil cools the skin and improves local blood flow, providing relief from pain. Research has shown that peppermint oil can be more effective than a placebo in easing headache symptoms. However, Dr Sood advises that it should complement — not replace — prescribed migraine treatments.
Humidifier to improve breathing and sleep
Dry indoor air can irritate nasal passages and make breathing more difficult. Dr Sood suggests using a humidifier to maintain indoor humidity between 40 and 60 percent, which helps keep airways moist and supports easier breathing, especially during sleep. He also emphasizes the importance of cleaning the humidifier regularly to prevent bacterial or mold growth.
These natural habits, when practiced regularly, can gently support the body’s own recovery process and enhance everyday comfort.
