India and Pakistan’s intense rivalry added another chapter at the T20 World Cup 2026 as Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha once again avoided a handshake at the toss. The high-voltage Group A encounter took place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo where all eyes were on the captains even before the first ball was bowled.

Speculation was high over whether the two leaders would exchange pleasantries following the tense history between the sides but the moment passed without any gesture of goodwill. Both captains maintained their distance and did not acknowledge each other during the toss proceedings. Pakistan won the toss and chose to bowl first after which Salman Ali Agha walked away without interacting with his Indian counterpart.

The incident echoed similar scenes from previous tournaments where the customary handshake between the two teams has been absent. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar weighed in earlier criticising the continuation of the no-handshake stance and questioned whether the spirit of the game was being upheld.

Suryakumar Yadav had also chosen not to address the topic directly during the pre-match press conference while Salman Ali Agha expressed hope that the contest would be played with mutual respect adding that the decision on handshakes was not in his control.

Tensions between the two cricketing nations have remained high since the Asia Cup where multiple matches were marked by controversy and strained interactions. The situation escalated further after administrative disputes involving cricket boards and the ICC which only reinforced the ongoing standoff.

The absence of handshakes has since become a recurring theme across several tournaments including women’s and junior level competitions. Given the recent political and sporting developments between the two countries the lack of a handshake at the T20 World Cup did not come as a surprise to fans and experts alike.
