UK-based tech brand Nothing has officially introduced Nothing OS 4.0, its Android 16-based software update, bringing a host of new features aimed at improving performance, design, and user experience. The update, revealed on September 17, 2025, will soon begin rolling out to Nothing smartphones, with an Open Beta testing programme launching in the coming weeks.

A Fresh Design and Smarter Interface

Nothing OS 4.0 introduces a redesigned user interface with cleaner visuals and more standardised system elements. The lock screen now includes updated clock styles, while the Quick Settings panel has been simplified for easier access. The new Extra Dark Mode has also been added to help reduce eye strain and extend battery life.

AI Dashboard for Transparency and Control

A major highlight of the update is the introduction of an AI usage dashboard, designed to give users greater transparency and control over artificial intelligence functions on their devices. The dashboard provides daily and weekly usage insights, showing which large language models (LLMs) are active, alongside hints about when AI features are in use. Nothing says this is part of its effort to enhance privacy and transparency around AI.

Multitasking with Pop-Up View

The new Pop-Up View feature lets users run two floating apps at once for more efficient multitasking. Simple swipe gestures allow users to minimise or expand apps, making it easier to switch between tasks without losing focus.

TrueLens Engine for Camera and Gallery

Photography also gets a boost with the TrueLens Engine, which improves the Camera and Gallery apps. Users will notice better controls, creative presets, and a refreshed interface designed to enhance photo and video quality.

Performance and Connectivity Enhancements

Nothing OS 4.0 also refines the lock screen experience and Always On Display, improves the brightness slider, and brings faster access to Bluetooth recording. Connectivity upgrades to both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi aim to deliver smoother performance for daily use.

Nothing confirmed that details on device eligibility for the update will be shared soon, but the company emphasised its commitment to continuous innovation as it prepares for future AI-focused devices following its recent $200 million funding round.
