Novak Djokovic has unexpectedly wrapped up his 2025 campaign just moments after celebrating his ATP 250 Athens championship. The world-renowned Serbian star announced his withdrawal from the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin due to a persistent shoulder injury, ruling him out of the prestigious year-end event for the second consecutive season.
Djokovic secured his 101st career trophy on Saturday after an intense three-set battle against local favourite Lorenzo Musetti, turning around the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to claim the Hellenic Championship title. The win also made him the record holder for the most hard-court titles in men’s tennis history with 72, surpassing Roger Federer.
Shortly after lifting the trophy, he shared a message with fans expressing disappointment over having to withdraw. He stated that competing in Turin was a major goal but his shoulder issue continues to require recovery time, making it impossible for him to perform at his best. Djokovic also thanked supporters and promised to return stronger when his health allows.
His withdrawal opens the door for Musetti, who now enters the ATP Finals field directly. The Italian, who enjoyed one of his best seasons yet with multiple deep runs including a Masters 1000 final and several semifinal finishes, will make his debut in the event. He is scheduled to begin his campaign against Carlos Alcaraz in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.
With Djokovic absent from the elite eight-man showdown, the competition dynamic may shift significantly, as players prepare for a wide-open title fight to close the 2025 tennis season.
