Novak Djokovic has left questions surrounding his future at the Australian Open unanswered following his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2026 final. The Serbian legend was defeated 6-2 2-6 3-6 5-7 in a gripping title clash, bringing an end to what had been an impressive run in Melbourne. Speaking after the match Djokovic admitted he remains unsure about what lies ahead in his career despite previously stating his ambition to continue playing until the 2028 Olympics.

Djokovic began the final strongly as he claimed the opening set in quick fashion while chasing a historic 25th Grand Slam title. However Alcaraz showed remarkable composure and resilience to turn the match around and secure the championship. As the contest wore on Djokovic appeared to lose momentum while the younger Spaniard raised his intensity to dominate the latter stages of the match.

During the post-match press conference the 38-year-old explained that he does not want to make long-term commitments about his playing schedule. He acknowledged that while he hopes to remain competitive in the coming years nothing is guaranteed and his focus at present is on spending time with his family before deciding on his next steps. Djokovic emphasized his honesty with fans stating that he genuinely does not know how many tournaments he will play or when.

Despite the final loss Djokovic’s performance throughout the tournament highlighted his enduring competitiveness. He produced a standout display in the semifinals by defeating Jannik Sinner in a dramatic five-set encounter showing that he can still challenge the new generation. Djokovic last lifted a Grand Slam trophy at the US Open in 2023 and while he has reached multiple semifinals since then the Australian Open run reinforced his status as a formidable presence in men’s tennis.
