Novak Djokovic has advanced to the third round of the US Open 2025, but the Serbian star has drawn attention for an unexpected off-court issue. After his win over Zachary Svajda, Djokovic complained about the strong cannabis odour drifting across the tournament grounds. Despite his remarks, organisers of the tournament have confirmed they are unable to address the concern due to New York State laws permitting the recreational use of marijuana.
Djokovic began his campaign with a straight-sets victory over Learner Tien before overcoming a tough test against Svajda in the second round. He is now set to face Cameron Norrie in the third round on Friday, continuing his chase for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
Speaking after his latest win, Djokovic said:
“You can definitely feel it, it’s not like you can’t. Actually, you feel it more than anywhere else. Some people are more bothered, some less. I’m not a fan of that smell either. But it’s allowed here, and somehow you just have to accept it.”
Under New York law, adults over 21 are permitted to carry up to three ounces of cannabis and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis products for personal use. While the USTA (United States Tennis Association) enforces a strict no-smoking policy inside the venue, officials acknowledge that odours from outside the grounds often drift in, leaving players exposed to the smell during matches and practice sessions.
Djokovic is not the first player to raise the issue. Casper Ruud, who exited the tournament in the second round, also admitted being frustrated by the widespread marijuana scent, calling it one of the most annoying aspects of competing in New York.
Despite the complaints, the situation is unlikely to change, and Djokovic will need to adapt to the conditions as he continues his pursuit of another historic Grand Slam victory.
