Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, with rising cases in India where nearly 1 in 28 women is at risk. Nutritionist Leema Mahajan emphasizes the role of diet in lowering breast cancer risk and recommends six science-backed foods that can help prevent tumor development. Early incorporation of these foods into daily meals may significantly reduce the likelihood of developing breast cancer later in life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer occurs when abnormal breast cells grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that can spread throughout the body. Globally, breast cancer caused an estimated 670,000 deaths in 2022, highlighting the importance of preventive measures.

Six Foods That May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

  1. Pomegranate – Rich in ellagitannins, pomegranates help inhibit cancer cell growth and reduce estrogen-driven tumor proliferation. Consuming 1 cup of fresh pomegranate daily is recommended for optimal benefits.
  2. Cruciferous Vegetables – Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage contain sulforaphane, which supports liver detoxification of harmful estrogen by-products and slows tumor formation. Eating them raw or lightly cooked 3-4 times a week is advised.
  3. Soy and Dal – Isoflavones in soy and lentils act as natural estrogens, helping balance hormone levels and reduce breast cancer risk. Incorporating tofu, soymilk, or dal 2-3 times per week may lower the risk by up to 30 percent.
  4. Amla or Guava – High in vitamin C, these fruits combat oxidative stress, repair DNA damage, and boost immunity. Daily consumption of vitamin C-rich fruits can prevent DNA mutations linked to cancer.
  5. Olive Oil – Polyphenols in extra-virgin olive oil reduce inflammation, protect healthy cells, and slow tumor progression. Using 1 teaspoon daily in cooking or salads is recommended.
  6. Flaxseeds – Lignans in flaxseeds balance estrogen levels and reduce breast cancer cell growth. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds on smoothies, yogurt, or salads to maximize benefits.

Leema Mahajan stresses that while diet plays a key role, regular check-ups and medical consultations are crucial for overall breast cancer prevention. These nutritional choices complement other preventive strategies, contributing to a healthier lifestyle.
