A leading cancer specialist has shared that making small, consistent changes in your diet — especially adding more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains — can help your body defend itself and reduce the risk of developing cancer.
According to Dr Sharmin Yaqin, an oncology and cancer prevention expert based in Dubai, everyday nutrition choices can play a vital role in protecting against harmful cell changes. In her recent social media post on October 1, she emphasized how plant-based foods are packed with compounds that support the body’s natural healing and defence system.
Dr Yaqin explained that fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals and polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that help combat inflammation and neutralize free radicals in the body — unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to diseases like cancer. “These compounds are nature’s defense mechanism,” she noted, highlighting how a diet rich in colorful fruits, leafy greens, and whole grains can make a big difference in long-term health.
She added that fruits are particularly beneficial because they’re naturally sweet and easy to add to daily meals. “Polyphenols found in fruits have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that help cleanse the body of free radicals,” Dr Yaqin shared.
