Your pillow is more than just a bedroom accessory – it is in direct contact with your face for eight to ten hours every night. According to orthopaedic surgeon Dr Manan Vora, pillows have a natural lifespan and ignoring this can impact both sleep quality and overall health.
Pillows accumulate dead skin cells, oils, sweat, drool, dust mites, and other debris over time. Dr Vora emphasizes that synthetic materials like polyurethane foam can degrade and release organic compounds, making regular replacement essential. Failure to clean or replace pillows can contribute to skin problems, allergies, irritation, and in rare cases, serious lung infections.
The lifespan of a pillow varies by material. Polyester pillows last six months to two years, feather pillows one to three years, memory foam pillows two to three years, latex pillows three to four years, and buckwheat pillows are the most durable, lasting three to five years. Maintaining pillow hygiene ensures better sleep, reduces exposure to harmful particles, and supports overall health.
Dr Vora advises checking your pillows regularly and replacing them according to their type to protect your sleep quality, respiratory health, and skin wellness. This information is based on expert insights and is intended for educational purposes, not as a substitute for medical advice.
