The Pakistan Super League has been embroiled in controversy following an alleged ball-tampering incident involving Lahore Qalandars players during their clash against Karachi Kings. The situation unfolded in the final over of the match when Karachi required 14 runs to win.
Fast bowler Haris Rauf was preparing to deliver the last over when he was seen in conversation with captain Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman. Television visuals appeared to show Fakhar interacting with the ball in a manner that raised suspicion. On-field umpire Faisal Afridi intervened and requested the ball for inspection before consulting with fellow official Sharfuddoula.
After reviewing the situation, the umpires imposed a five-run penalty on Lahore Qalandars. This decision significantly altered the match scenario, reducing Karachi’s target to nine runs off six deliveries. Karachi Kings capitalized on the opportunity and completed the chase with ease, securing a four-wicket victory.
Following the match, Lahore Qalandars all-rounder Sikandar Raza addressed the media and explained what occurred during the incident. He stated that players were instructed by the umpires to step aside while discussions were held with the third umpire. According to Raza, the players were simply asked to return to their fielding positions while the officials reviewed the matter.
Raza also clarified his own involvement, stating that he had no intention of altering the ball’s condition. He explained that he was attempting to manage moisture caused by dew near the boundary and was later advised not to dry the ball using his shirt, instead using sleeves as per instructions.
He further emphasized that no formal inquiry had been initiated against him and urged restraint in drawing conclusions until clear evidence is presented. Meanwhile, both Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman have denied any wrongdoing.
However, reports indicate that Fakhar Zaman has been charged with a Level 3 offence under the PSL Code of Conduct. The charge relates to actions that may have altered the condition of the ball, which is strictly prohibited under league regulations. A hearing is expected to take place within 48 hours, after which a final decision will be announced.
