India are preparing for a high-stakes showdown against defending champions Australia in the Women’s World Cup semifinal at DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai on Thursday. With a spot in the final on the line and the aim to end an eight-year wait for a World Cup final appearance, the Women in Blue are eager to settle the score after their earlier league-stage loss to the Aussies.
Australia, who dominated the tournament with six wins and one No Result from seven matches, were the first to secure a semifinal berth. India clinched the final knockout spot by finishing with seven points — three wins and a result that didn’t go in their favor against Alyssa Healy’s side.
But while cricket fans anticipate a thrilling clash, the weather could become a major obstacle. October rains have disrupted matches throughout the league phase, with 10 games affected and six abandoned due to poor conditions. Navi Mumbai has witnessed heavy showers all week, raising concerns over another rain-marred contest.
According to weather updates, the city may see a yellow alert in the morning, followed by improvement in the afternoon with around a 25% chance of showers. The probability drops to 15% in the evening, but uncertainty remains.
What if rain washes out the semifinal?
The ICC has arranged a reserve day to ensure the match has the best possible chance to be completed. If Thursday’s fixture cannot be played, action will shift to Friday, October 31. However, the forecast shows scattered showers with an 84% chance of rain on the reserve day too.
If both days are washed out, Australia will automatically move to the final based on finishing higher on the points table. They would then meet South Africa, who booked their place in the title clash after defeating England in the first semifinal.
India will hope rain does not interfere with their mission to create history — and that fans get the contest they’ve been waiting for.
