Rasmus Hojlund Clarifies ‘Siu’ Celebration Was Tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo Not a Taunt

Date:

During the UEFA Nations League quarterfinal, Denmark secured a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Copenhagen on Thursday, with Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute. However, the young forward found himself at the center of a debate after celebrating his goal with Cristiano Ronaldo’s signature ‘Siu’ celebration, while the Portuguese legend was on the field.

Hojlund’s Tribute to His Idol

Following the match, Hojlund addressed the speculation, stating that his celebration was in honor of Ronaldo and not intended to mock him. Speaking to reporters, he said, “It was a tribute to my idol, not meant to disrespect him. He has had a massive influence on my career. Scoring against Portugal, with him on the pitch, was an incredible moment.”

Reflecting on his admiration for Ronaldo, Hojlund recalled a defining moment from his childhood: “I remember watching him score a free kick in 2011. Since then, I have been a huge fan of his.”

Ronaldo’s Role in Portugal’s Squad Defended by Coach

Despite being 40 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to feature prominently in the Portugal national team, drawing mixed reactions from fans and analysts. However, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has consistently backed Ronaldo’s presence in the squad.

In an interview with Coaches Voice, Martinez justified his decision, stating, “Cristiano’s talent is undeniable. He is one of the greatest players in football history. His experience is unmatched, being the only player to participate in six European Championships with over 200 international caps.”

Martinez further emphasized Ronaldo’s ongoing contributions, adding, “What sets him apart is his commitment. His passion for representing Portugal is contagious, inspiring the entire squad. He remains our top scorer, with 17 goals in 21 matches over the past two years.”

As the UEFA Nations League progresses, all eyes will remain on both Ronaldo and Hojlund, with discussions continuing around the veteran’s future and the young forward’s growing reputation.
