Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have addressed growing questions around the availability of star pacer Josh Hazlewood ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season.
The Bengaluru-based franchise is set to kick off its campaign on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, Hazlewood is expected to miss the opening matches as he continues his recovery from multiple injuries.
The Australian pacer is currently undergoing rehabilitation in Australia after setbacks that previously ruled him out of the Ashes and the T20 World Cup. His return timeline remains uncertain, with clearance from Cricket Australia still pending.
RCB’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, confirmed that the franchise is maintaining regular communication with both the player and Cricket Australia regarding his progress. He stated that Hazlewood will only join the squad once he receives full medical approval.
Hazlewood played a crucial role in RCB’s title-winning campaign last season, finishing as one of their top performers with 22 wickets. His absence in the early phase of the tournament is expected to test the team’s bowling depth.
Adding to RCB’s concerns, Yash Dayal will also not be part of the squad due to personal reasons. Despite these setbacks, the team management remains confident in its bowling lineup.
Bobat highlighted the presence of promising domestic pacers within the squad, including options like Rasik, Abhinandan and Mangesh, who are expected to step up and fill the gap during Hazlewood’s absence.
RCB will be aiming to maintain momentum from their previous title-winning season, even as they navigate early challenges with key players unavailable.
