Real Madrid Hit by Injury Blow as Thibaut Courtois Ruled Out of Bayern Munich Champions League Clash

Spanish giants Real Madrid have suffered a significant setback ahead of a crucial phase of the season, with star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sidelined due to injury. The Belgian shot stopper is expected to miss key upcoming fixtures including the highly anticipated UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash against Bayern Munich.

Courtois picked up the injury during the second leg of the Round of 16 tie against Manchester City. Despite initially attempting to continue, he was replaced at half time by Andriy Lunin as Madrid secured a dominant aggregate victory.

Medical evaluations later confirmed that Courtois has suffered a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right thigh. According to club reports, the goalkeeper is likely to be out of action for approximately six weeks, dealing a major blow to Madrid’s plans during a crucial stretch of matches.

Manager Álvaro Arbeloa addressed the situation after the match, explaining that there was no need to risk the player further given the busy schedule ahead. He also praised Lunin for stepping up under pressure and delivering a solid performance in the second half.

With Courtois unavailable, Lunin is expected to take over as the first choice goalkeeper. The Ukrainian previously impressed during the 2023 to 2024 season when he filled in during another injury spell for Courtois, including standout performances in European competition.

Madrid will now rely heavily on Lunin as they prepare for important domestic fixtures including a derby clash as well as their upcoming Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich.

Courtois’ absence represents a significant challenge for Real Madrid as they aim to maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
