Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi is rumored to be working on a smartphone that could feature one of the largest batteries ever seen in its lineup — between 8,500mAh and 9,000mAh — while keeping the thickness under 8.5mm. The leak, shared by tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, suggests that Redmi might achieve this feat using an upgraded version of silicon-carbon composite battery technology.
This technology is designed to deliver high capacity without significantly increasing the device’s size or compromising battery life cycles. If accurate, the upcoming model would surpass all current Redmi phones in battery capacity.
The rumored handset would join a growing trend among Chinese smartphone makers who are pushing battery limits while maintaining sleek designs. Just recently, reports surfaced that Honor could be developing a 10,000mAh battery phone, believed to be the successor to the Honor Power series. That device is expected to use similar silicon-carbon advancements to achieve such capacity.
In comparison, current flagship battery sizes rarely exceed 7,000mAh. Redmi’s own Turbo 4 Pro houses a 7,550mAh battery, but leaks claim the upcoming Turbo 5 Pro could feature an 8,000mAh unit. This new rumored device would take things even further.
Other brands are also innovating in battery technology. Honor’s X70, launched in July, is just 7.96mm thick yet packs an 8,300mAh battery, offering up to 18 hours of screen time, 15.6 hours of navigation, and 27 hours of short video playback. It also supports 80W wired fast charging.
While Xiaomi has yet to confirm details about the rumored Redmi device, if the leak holds true, it could mark a major milestone in balancing ultra-high battery capacity with a slim smartphone profile.
