Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag is facing growing scrutiny after a noticeable dip in batting form during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season. Despite leading his side to a strong start with four consecutive wins, recent back to back defeats have raised questions about both team balance and his individual performance.
Losses against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders pushed the Royals down the standings, exposing weaknesses in the middle order. A major concern has been Parag’s limited contribution with the bat, managing just 61 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 122.
After taking over the captaincy role following the departure of Sanju Samson, Parag has shown promise as a leader. However, his struggles at the crease have drawn criticism, especially with four of his dismissals coming within the first ten balls. His strike rate currently ranks among the lowest for batters facing a significant number of deliveries this season.
Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has suggested a tactical change ahead of the Royals’ upcoming clash against Lucknow Super Giants. He recommended that Parag consider moving down the batting order to ease pressure, while promoting Shimron Hetmyer into a more influential top order role.
Jaffer emphasized that in form players should be given greater responsibility, noting that Hetmyer has the ability to dominate attacks if given enough time at the crease. He also highlighted that Parag’s current form could impact his authority within the team if improvements are not made soon.
According to Jaffer, Parag needs to focus on spending more time at the crease, refining shot selection, and improving execution. While acknowledging his talent and past performances, he stressed that consistent contributions with the bat are essential for maintaining influence as a captain.
As Rajasthan Royals prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures, all eyes will be on Riyan Parag to see if he can regain form and lead from the front in the remainder of the tournament.
