Ryan Gosling to Lead New Star Wars Movie ‘Starfighter’ Directed by Shawn Levy Set for 2027 Release

Date:

Lucasfilm has officially unveiled a brand-new Star Wars movie featuring acclaimed actor Ryan Gosling in the lead role. The announcement came during the Star Wars celebration event in Japan, where the studio revealed the film’s title — Star Wars: Starfighter — and shared early production details.

This upcoming film will be directed by Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine and the popular Netflix series Stranger Things. Levy is set to begin production in the fall of 2025, aiming for a theatrical release in May 2027.

According to Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Starfighter will be set five years after the events depicted in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), which concluded the Skywalker saga. The storyline will introduce an entirely new cast of characters and will explore an untouched era in the Star Wars universe that has yet to appear in any previous films or series. Although this time period has been touched upon in non-canon video games and novels, it marks its first official on-screen debut.

This new narrative direction promises to bring fresh perspectives and untold stories to the beloved franchise, attracting both longtime fans and newcomers alike. With Gosling’s involvement and Levy’s visionary direction, expectations are already building for what could be a groundbreaking chapter in the Star Wars legacy.

Ryan Gosling, a three-time Academy Award nominee, most recently received widespread praise for his portrayal of Ken in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. His addition to the Star Wars universe marks a significant step for the franchise as it continues to evolve beyond its traditional saga structure.

Created by George Lucas in 1977, Star Wars has grown into one of the most successful and influential science-fiction franchises in history. With nine main saga films, multiple spin-offs, and a wide array of live-action and animated series, the universe has amassed over $5.1 billion at global box offices.

Now, with Starfighter on the horizon, the galaxy far, far away is once again set to expand, offering fans an all-new adventure unlike any before.
