Samsung has revealed its first extended reality (XR) headset, named Project Moohan, set to launch in 2025. This innovative device was showcased during Google’s presentation of the new Android XR operating system, which is tailored for mixed reality headsets and augmented reality (AR) glasses. The Moohan XR headset will support Google’s Gemini AI assistant and come equipped with apps optimized for a large virtual display. This launch positions Samsung as a competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3.
Project Moohan, which means “infinity” in Korean, operates on Android XR, Google’s latest platform designed to integrate AR, virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI). Although the exact release date and price remain undisclosed, Google confirmed that the Moohan XR headset would be the first device to feature Android XR next year.
The Moohan XR headset will boast cutting-edge displays, passthrough capabilities, and support for multi-modal input. In comparison, Apple’s Vision Pro features Micro-OLED displays with a per-eye resolution of 3,660 x 3,200 pixels.
Samsung has hinted at the potential of the Moohan XR headset since the Galaxy Unpacked event in 2023, where the Galaxy S23 series was introduced. At that event, Samsung announced its collaboration with Google and Qualcomm to develop its first XR headset.
Google has also unveiled features for the Android XR platform, such as Circle to Search gestures, viewing content via Google TV and Google Photos on a virtual display, and web browsing with Google Chrome. Additional features include live text translation and immersive location views with Google Maps.
Samsung’s Project Moohan represents a significant step forward in XR technology, integrating advanced display capabilities and AI support to enhance the user experience in virtual and augmented reality.
