India made notable selection calls in their opening T20 World Cup 2026 match against the USA as Sanju Samson was left out of the playing eleven while Ishan Kishan earned the opening spot. The decision followed weeks of speculation after the team management hinted at changes during a warm up fixture against South Africa. When India finally took the field at the Wankhede Stadium the debate ended with Kishan partnering at the top and Samson sitting out.
Sanju Samson had earlier been backed by selectors and was assured the opener role when the World Cup squad was announced in December. However his form dipped during the home T20 series against New Zealand where he scored only 46 runs across five innings including a first ball dismissal. The lack of runs proved costly as the team management reassessed their batting strategy ahead of the tournament opener.
Ishan Kishan on the other hand forced his way back into contention with strong performances in domestic cricket particularly the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He carried that momentum into the New Zealand series scoring over 200 runs and finishing as the second highest run scorer including a match winning century in the final game. His consistent returns helped him regain the trust of the selectors and secure the opening role against the USA.
India were also without star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the match after he was ruled out due to illness. Captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed the absence at the toss and the BCCI later shared a health update stating that Bumrah is being closely monitored by the medical team. In his absence Mohammed Siraj was included in the playing eleven marking his return to T20 international cricket after an 18 month gap. Siraj was added to the squad late following an injury to Hrshit Rana.
The USA won the toss and chose to bowl first as India began their T20 World Cup campaign with a reshuffled lineup and key changes driven by form and fitness.
