Qualcomm’s next flagship mobile processor is already making waves ahead of its official unveiling. According to fresh industry chatter the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Pro chipset could arrive with a significantly higher cost compared to previous generations raising concerns about flagship smartphone prices in 2027 and beyond.
The global smartphone market is currently facing rising component costs especially for memory and storage due to accelerated AI adoption. This pressure is now expected to spill over into chipset pricing as well. A well known Chinese tipster suggests that Qualcomm’s next premium processor internally referred to as SM8975 will be positioned at an extremely high price point.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Pro is expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm process which should bring notable gains in performance and power efficiency. It is also tipped to support next generation LPDDR6 RAM and include a fully enabled GPU along with expanded cache capabilities. These upgrades could make it one of the most powerful smartphone chipsets ever produced but also one of the most expensive.
Reports indicate that the Pro variant may debut alongside a standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 model with the latter designed to be more cost effective. While the regular version could rely on LPDDR5x memory and a toned down GPU the Pro model is expected to deliver maximum performance for ultra premium devices.
Samsung’s future flagship devices are likely to be among the first to adopt the new chipset. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Pro is rumored to power the Galaxy S27 Ultra which could see a higher retail price as a result of increased component costs. Other brands may also reserve the Pro variant exclusively for their top tier models while mid range devices continue with the standard version.
Qualcomm has not yet confirmed the existence or launch timeline of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Pro. However if these leaks are accurate the chipset could redefine the premium smartphone segment while pushing flagship pricing into a new bracket.
