A fresh debate has erupted in the football world after former Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder suggested that Argentina benefitted from good fortune during their 2022 World Cup victory. Sneijder argued that Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo hold a stronger chance of lifting the 2026 World Cup title when the tournament unfolds across the United States Canada and Mexico.
Reflecting on Argentina’s dramatic win in Qatar where Lionel Messi delivered a historic performance Sneijder remarked that despite their brilliant run the South American champions enjoyed moments of luck along the way. Speaking during a conversation with AdventureGamers he stated that Portugal currently possess a more complete and balanced squad heading into 2026 giving them an edge over Argentina. Sneijder highlighted Portugal’s depth and tactical discipline as reasons why he considers them one of the major contenders for the upcoming tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo is gearing up for what is expected to be his sixth and final World Cup appearance after Portugal’s emphatic 9-1 win over Armenia secured qualification. However he will be unavailable for the opening two matches due to a suspension earned during qualifiers. Despite his age the veteran forward remains central to Portugal’s ambitions.
Lionel Messi meanwhile has not yet confirmed participation for 2026. The Argentine captain has shared that his decision will depend on his physical condition form and overall readiness closer to the event. While he has not dismissed the possibility of returning he has emphasised that he will only commit if he feels able to maintain the standards he expects from himself.
