A long-awaited follow-up to the iconic sci-fi parody Spaceballs is officially on the way, with Amazon MGM Studios announcing a theatrical release scheduled for April 23, 2027. The new film will revive the beloved franchise that first hit screens in 1987 under the direction of comedy legend Mel Brooks.

Fans of the original will be pleased to see several familiar faces returning, including Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman and George Wyner. Alongside the original cast, the sequel introduces fresh talent such as Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan, adding a new dynamic to the project.

The film is being directed by Josh Greenbaum, while the screenplay is co-written by Josh Gad along with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Production duties are being handled by industry heavyweights Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Jeb Brody, along with Gad, Brooks, Greenbaum and Kevin Salter.

While details about the storyline and official title remain under wraps, excitement continues to build around the return of the cult classic. The original Spaceballs was a humorous take on the Star Wars universe and became a fan favorite over time despite modest box office earnings during its initial release.

The 1987 film featured a memorable ensemble cast including the late John Candy and even a voice cameo by Joan Rivers. Over the years, it has gained a strong following, making the announcement of a sequel particularly significant for fans of parody and sci-fi comedy.

Hints about the sequel first surfaced in 2024 when Josh Gad shared his enthusiasm about completing the script, describing it as one of his most exciting projects. With a confirmed release date now in place, anticipation for the next chapter in the Spaceballs universe continues to grow.
