Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk has finally addressed the controversy surrounding the casting of former BIGBANG member T.O.P in the highly anticipated sequel. With Season 2 set to premiere this December, the director has been candid about the various challenges and issues linked to the Netflix phenomenon in recent interviews.
Despite facing backlash over the legal issues involving T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyun), Hwang Dong Hyuk decided to move forward with his casting for the second season. The director revealed that financial incentives played a role in his return to the project, even though he endured significant stress, losing “eight or nine” teeth in the process. Hwang has now clarified his stance on the controversy associated with the show.
The announcement of the new cast for Squid Game Season 2 included names like Im Si Wan, Park Gyu Young, Kang Ha Neul, Lee Jin Uk, Park Sung Hoon, Yang Dong Geun, Kang Ae Shim, Lee Da Wit, Noh Jae Won, Cho Yuri, and Won Ji An. The addition of T.O.P, however, sparked strong reactions from fans due to his past legal troubles. In 2017, Choi was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a two-year suspension for marijuana use. This led to his discharge from military service and a noticeable absence from social media, creating a gap in his entertainment career.
On November 13 (KST), Hwang Dong Hyuk spoke to South Korean media outlet Maeil Business Newspaper, expressing his surprise at the magnitude of the backlash. He believed that since the incident occurred long ago and Choi had served his sentence, it would be an appropriate time for his return. Hwang noted that many artists have made successful comebacks after similar incidents. However, he realized that he might have underestimated public interest and scrutiny regarding the matter.
Hwang remains supportive of Choi Seung Hyun, praising his dedication and commitment. He confirmed that he personally oversaw T.O.P’s audition, where Choi showcased his effort and talent through practice videos and script readings. Hwang believes Choi is the most suitable choice for the role, which led to his decision to continue with the casting despite the controversy.
