Hwang Dong Hyuk, the acclaimed director of Squid Game, has shared his thoughts on the surprising Golden Globe nomination received by the second season of the popular series. In a recent interview, Hwang revealed his disbelief upon learning about the recognition and explained why he did not expect the series to win an award. The Golden Globe nomination for Squid Game Season 2 in the Best Television Series-Drama category came as a shock to many, especially since the series had not yet been released when the nomination was announced in December. Judges had early access to the latest episodes, allowing them to evaluate the show before its premiere.
Hwang candidly discussed how dividing the story into two parts, Seasons 2 and 3, influenced his expectations. He admitted, “When I decided to split the narrative into two parts, I understood that the message I intended to convey would remain incomplete. Without the full story being presented, I felt that winning an award would be unlikely. Recognition often comes when a narrative is complete, and that is not the case here.” Despite his doubts, Hwang expressed gratitude, saying, “It was a pleasant shock to see the nomination happen even before the release. Being among the six selected works feels like an achievement in itself, and I am truly satisfied.”
Looking ahead to Season 3, Hwang expressed hope that the next installment would deliver the complete story and deeper message he wants to share with the audience. Reflecting on past experiences, he recalled, “During Season 1, the Golden Globes boycott and the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our recognition. This time, I am thankful for the opportunity to attend the ceremony.” While he does not anticipate an award for Season 2, Hwang remains optimistic about the potential of Season 3 to achieve greater recognition once the full story is revealed.
