The brutal and gripping world of Squid Game returns with its third and final season, and according to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, viewers shouldn’t expect any light at the end of the tunnel. Speaking ahead of the Season 3 premiere on June 27, Hwang revealed that this installment will delve deeper into the darkest corners of human nature, morality, and survival. “The tone is going to be more dark and bleak,” he said. “The world, as I observe it, has less hope.”

This season aims to push the boundaries even further than its predecessors. While some fans may be yearning for a redemptive arc or a satisfying conclusion for the characters they’ve emotionally invested in, Hwang firmly believes that not all stories are destined for a happy ending. “If you try to force one, the essence is compromised,” he explained. “If a story is meant to reflect reality, then sometimes, that means embracing its sadness. Squid Game is no exception.”

Season 3 will introduce new characters, more brutal games, and an increased level of moral ambiguity. Hwang hints at deeper philosophical themes being woven throughout the narrative: “I wanted to explore questions like, ‘What is the last resort of humankind? Can we leave anything better for the generations after us?’” His goal is to leave audiences with one haunting question: How much humanity do I have left in me?

Lead actor Lee Jung-jae acknowledged that Season 2 had its critics but emphasized that the intention was always to preserve the raw message of the show. “The two seasons were filmed back to back. We weren’t trying to fix anything—we wanted to deliver the message,” he said, referencing the series’ core themes of exploitation, desperation, and what unchecked capitalism can do to the human spirit.

Lee also teased a finale that defies expectations. “Even I didn’t expect the ending,” he admitted. “People will be shocked, and it will definitely stir up a lot of discussions.”

As speculation mounts and spoilers are in high demand, Lee advised fans to remain patient. “Everyone keeps asking me for hints,” he laughed. “But if you really want to enjoy Season 3, stay calm. It’s almost here.”
