Valve has finally delivered a much-anticipated update to Steam Deck owners, introducing a new mode that allows downloads to continue even when the screen is turned off. This low-power download functionality has begun rolling out through the Beta and Preview channels and is expected to reach all users soon.

Since its debut in 2022, Steam Deck required the display to remain active while downloading games or installing updates, leading to higher battery drain. Players have consistently requested a more efficient background download option, and the latest update aims to address that demand.

Valve detailed the upgrade in a recent Steam platform announcement, confirming that active downloads will now continue in a reduced power state with the display off. Once the process finishes or conditions change, the handheld can automatically transition to sleep mode.

By default, the feature activates when the handheld is plugged into power. However, Steam Deck users can also manually enable display-off downloading while running on battery by navigating to Settings followed by Power. Starting a game download and pressing the power button will now trigger a prompt asking if the process should continue with the screen disabled. Alternatively, after a short idle period the device can switch into low-power download mode on its own.

If a user interacts with the handheld during this time, such as by pressing the power button or adjusting the device, a status interface will appear showing download activity and estimated progress. Players can then choose to fully wake the device or continue background downloading while the display remains off.

This mode supports both plugged-in and battery operation. For protection during mobile use, Steam Deck will automatically move into full sleep mode if battery power drops below twenty percent, temporarily pausing any ongoing downloads.

The enhancement is part of Valve’s continued effort to refine Steam Deck performance as competition from other handheld gaming PCs including Asus ROG Ally grows. Users can expect wider availability once testing in the Beta and Preview branches is complete.
