India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav dedicated his team’s Asia Cup Group A victory over Pakistan to the Indian Armed Forces and the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. The skipper, who celebrated his 35th birthday on Sunday, played a composed unbeaten knock of 47 runs from 37 balls, guiding India to a comfortable seven-wicket win with 25 balls remaining while chasing a target of 128.
The match carried extra emotion as Suryakumar chose to dedicate the triumph to the soldiers and families affected by the recent tragedy in Kashmir, where 26 innocent lives were lost earlier this year. He acknowledged their courage and sacrifice, highlighting that the team stands firmly with the victims and their families.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Suryakumar said: “On this special occasion, we want to express our solidarity with the families of the Pahalgam victims and dedicate this win to our armed forces, who have shown immense bravery. We hope our performances continue to inspire them and bring moments of joy.”
The emotional gesture came in the backdrop of heightened tensions following the attack, after which India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. Reflecting the nation’s mood, Indian players refrained from the customary post-match handshake with the Pakistan team. Even before the game, Suryakumar did not exchange greetings with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha, underlining the charged atmosphere.
On the field, India’s bowlers set up the win with disciplined performances. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakaravarthy picked up two wickets each, restricting Pakistan to 127/9 in their allotted overs. In reply, opener Abhishek Sharma provided a flying start with a quickfire 31 from 13 balls, before Suryakumar and Shivam Dube finished the chase with confidence, remaining unbeaten on 47 and 10 respectively.
Adding to the occasion, Suryakumar called the victory his “return gift” to the nation on his birthday. “Winning against Pakistan always feels special, and this is a perfect gift for all the fans back home,” he said.
The win not only strengthened India’s Asia Cup campaign but also symbolized solidarity, resilience, and a tribute to the armed forces who continue to protect the nation with courage.
