India’s T20 setup could be heading toward a significant transition as concerns grow over the recent form of Suryakumar Yadav. Once considered one of the most explosive batters in the shortest format, his performances over the past several months have raised serious doubts about his place in the squad.
In the latest Indian Premier League fixture, Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a first-ball duck against Arshdeep Singh during the clash between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. While low scores are part of the game, it is the pattern and approach in his recent outings that have become a growing concern.
Despite a brief return to form during a home series against New Zealand national cricket team, where he registered multiple half-centuries at an impressive strike rate, that resurgence now appears short-lived. His performances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup were below expectations, with only one notable fifty in the competition.
Since taking over the T20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2024, Suryakumar’s batting consistency has visibly declined. In the current IPL season, his scores of 16, 51, 6, 33, and 0 highlight the inconsistency. Even his half-century came at a relatively slower pace compared to his previously aggressive standards.
A major indicator of his dip in form is the reduced effectiveness of his signature shots. His once-reliable ramp shots are no longer producing results, and bowlers have adapted by targeting him with slower deliveries. Additionally, his ability to dominate through the off-side, particularly with inside-out shots, has diminished.
With strong performers like Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar consistently delivering impactful innings in the IPL, the selectors may soon face a difficult decision. Both players have showcased the kind of form and temperament that could strengthen India’s middle order.
India’s upcoming T20 series against England could be a turning point. With age also becoming a factor, Suryakumar may find it increasingly difficult to reclaim his peak form. Following the gradual transition seen with senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, a similar shift might be on the horizon.
Unless there is a significant turnaround, the coming months could determine whether Suryakumar Yadav remains a part of India’s long-term T20 plans or makes way for the next generation of in-form players.
