Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, takes on one of her most challenging transformations yet as she steps into the shoes of legendary boxer Christy Martin in the highly anticipated biographical drama Christy, set to release on November 7. The film explores Martin’s rise to fame in the male-dominated world of professional boxing while also shining a light on her turbulent personal life, including her abusive marriage.
The story begins in West Virginia, where Christy Martin first discovers her passion and raw talent for boxing. Driven by determination and grit, her career flourishes under the guidance of her husband and manager Jim Martin, played by Ben Foster. However, the biopic doesn’t shy away from Martin’s darkest struggles, portraying her battle to break free from abuse and reclaim her life.
Sweeney underwent a dramatic physical transformation for the role, gaining over 30 pounds through an intense training regimen that included weightlifting, kickboxing, and endurance drills. Speaking about the experience, she described herself as feeling “crazy strong” after months of preparation.
The cast also includes Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters, Christy’s mother, whose relationship with her daughter was both complicated and supportive; Ethan Embry as her father John Salters, who encouraged Christy’s boxing career; Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne, Christy’s love interest; and Chad L. Coleman as legendary boxing promoter Don King.
With powerful performances and a storyline that combines athletic triumph with personal resilience, Christy promises to be a moving and inspirational biopic. The film not only celebrates the career of one of boxing’s most iconic female athletes but also addresses important social issues such as domestic violence and personal empowerment.
