Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially revealed the cast of the upcoming fantasy film The Hunt for Gollum, expanding the legendary Middle-earth saga with both returning stars and fresh faces. The announcement was made during a major studio presentation at CinemaCon.

Among the biggest highlights is Jamie Dornan stepping into the role of Strider, also known as Aragorn, a character famously portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in the original trilogy. Dornan’s casting marks a new chapter for the iconic ranger of the North.

Joining him is Leo Woodall, who will play Halvard, a fellow Dúnedain warrior accompanying Aragorn on a critical mission. Meanwhile, Lee Pace reprises his role as the Elven king Thranduil, continuing his presence from The Hobbit films.

The film is directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns as Gollum, the complex and tragic creature central to the storyline. Serkis originally brought the character to life in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and remains closely associated with the role.

Set in the timeline between The Hobbit trilogy and The Lord of the Rings series, the story follows Aragorn and Gandalf as they attempt to locate Gollum. Their mission is crucial in uncovering secrets about Bilbo’s ring, later revealed to be the One Ring that threatens all of Middle-earth.

The film also welcomes Kate Winslet to the franchise in a new role, while fan-favorite Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf and Elijah Wood reprises his role as Frodo. The movie is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.

In addition to this project, another film set in the same universe is already in development under the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. The screenplay is being developed by Stephen Colbert along with Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee, promising further expansion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s cinematic world.
