Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has reportedly stepped away from his long-rumoured outer space movie, according to industry sources. The ambitious project, which once involved collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, has now been shelved due to complications surrounding government approvals.
Reports suggest that the film required federal clearance and close coordination with NASA to shoot aboard the International Space Station. However, Cruise was reportedly unwilling to seek assistance from then US President Donald Trump, a decision said to be driven by personal and political considerations. Insiders claim the actor preferred to abandon the project rather than request a high-level political favour.
Back in 2020, NASA publicly confirmed discussions with Cruise for a space-based film, with director Doug Liman attached to the project. The idea was widely viewed as groundbreaking, with Cruise aiming to create a cinematic milestone that would stand the test of time rather than serve as a publicity stunt. Despite early excitement and public endorsements from NASA officials, the film never moved into production.
More recently, Cruise has also reportedly declined a 2025 Kennedy Center honour, citing scheduling issues. For now, the actor remains focused on upcoming projects, including a new film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, while the once-historic space venture remains grounded.
