During the Paramount Pictures presentation at Caesars Palace, Cruise requested the audience to join him in a moment of silence, paying respects to Kilmer, who had played Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside him in the 1986 classic Top Gun and later reprised the role in Top Gun: Maverick.
Reflecting on their friendship and shared experiences, Cruise expressed, “Before we begin, I’d like to take a moment to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer. His dedication, talent, and passion for cinema were unmatched. I feel incredibly grateful and honored that he was part of Top Gun and returned for Top Gun: Maverick. Following the moment of silence, Cruise emotionally added, “Thank you, Val. I wish you peace on your next journey. And thank you, everyone, for joining me in honoring him. I know he would have appreciated it.”
Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, later confirmed to The New York Times that her father’s passing was due to complications from pneumonia. He had battled throat cancer since 2014, overcoming the disease but facing ongoing health struggles.
